In a survey conducted by the organizing committee of the Third Computer Festival, respondents singled out Sohu.com as the best web site for searching the Internet and chatting. Over a two-month period ending mid-May the organizing committee received over 100.000 responses to questionnaires that had been distributed nationwide through newspapers and the Internet. The committee is based in Zhongguancun, China's homegrown Silicon Valley in the west of Beijing.

Chinese Web surfers' clear preference for using the Sohu web site to search the Net was also underscored in a survey conducted by the Beijing Youth Daily. In results published on May 24, 46% of respondents chose Sohu.com as their favorite search engine. The popular daily, with a one million plus circulation, conducts monthly surveys in the cities Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou to trace Chinese consumer behavior in cyberspace.
