BEIJING, CHINA, April 10, 2002 - SOHU.COM (Nasdaq: SOHU),
China's leading online media, communications and commerce company, has hosted an
Internet VIP talk with US Assistant Trade Representative for China, Jeffrey A.
Bader, to exchange ideas on trade issues with the Chinese public directly.
Earlier this week, SOHU CEO and President Charles Zhang met US Trade
Representative Robert B. Zoellick at a breakfast meeting for a select number of
Chinese entrepreneurs. The high-level American trade delegation is visiting
Beijing this week to learn about Chinese trade policy and share information on
promoting free trade.
The 120-minutes online debate with Mr. Bader was attended by 15,342 unique
visitors who fielded an estimated 8,000 questions and remarks. The discussion
spanned a broad range of trade related issues. A career Foreign Service officer
and Mandarin Chinese speaker, Mr. Bader has previously served as Director of
Asian Affairs at the National Security Council and as Deputy Assistant Secretary
of State for East Asian Affairs.
Chinese citizens have expressed a keen interest in trade issues now that
China is a full member of the World Trade Organization, as reflected by high
volumes of book sales and popularity of TV programs about this subject. With the
Internet becoming a mass medium in China, particularly among young urban
population between 15-35 years old, Mr. Bader could, through his online talk,
effectively reach out to the generation that will most of all experience the
benefits of China's WTO membership and closer trade ties to the United States in
coming decades.
The SOHU web site (www.sohu.com) enjoys the widest reach among China's online
population with a registered user base totaling 49.8 million to date. SOHU is a
household name among the 300 million people living in urban centers. For the
second year in a row the Sinomonitor International survey, the largest Internet
Survey in the country, has ranked SOHU as the most visited portal in China.
"We are proud to host this online discussion and promote direct exchange
between China and the United States. The Internet is an empowering agent of
change that not just gives people access to information but allows them also to
be the responsible citizens that a modern China will be built on", commented
SOHU CEO and President Charles Zhang.
