San Diego, CA and Beijing,China, May 8, 2003 - The Upper
Deck Company, LLC a premier sports and entertainment publishing company, and
SOHU.com (Nasdaq: SOHU), China's leading online media, communications, commerce
and mobile value-added services company, will formally launch the official
English and Chinese language Yao Ming websites on May 9, 2003. The web site
launches will coincide with Yao Ming's charity telethon in support of the fight
against SARS, that SOHU and Upper Deck have co-sponsored. The Upper Deck
Company and Yao Ming have executed an exclusive agreement whereby Upper Deck
will build and host the official Yao Ming English language website, which will
give English speaking fans of the international basketball sensation insight
into his life and playing career, as well as an ability to purchase exclusive
products and autographed memorabilia - jerseys, basketballs, and game photos.
For more information on Yao Ming or where you can purchase exclusive autographed
memorabilia visit www.yaoming.net or www.upperdeckstore.com.
Under an exclusive two-year agreement, SOHU will build, operate and promote
the Yao Ming official website in the Chinese language
(http://yaoming.net/china), aimed at bringing the Chinese superstar in close
touch with his massive Chinese speaking fan base. Yao Ming will also act as
spokesperson for SOHU. This partnership follows a landmark agreement between
SOHU and the NBA announced in January 2003 to build and operate the official
Chinese language NBA site.
Both sites feature multimedia video and flash, statistics, game schedules,
audio and news content. Special features include: 'Meet Yao', the diary and
profile of Yao Ming and 'Ask Yao', where Yao Ming picks and answers fans'
questions.
Yao Ming, who returned to Shanghai on April 26 from the United States, is the
leading promoter of a celebrity-studded national 3-hour prime time live-TV and
online charity drive on May 11 in support of the fight against the Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS. The fundraising event is the first of its kind in
China. All proceeds will benefit the Chinese Red Cross' treatment and research
of SARS.
As Yao Ming's partners, Upper Deck and SOHU have been invited to be the
exclusive online co-sponsors of this event. SOHU will put together online
features, a live televised online chat with Yao Ming and a 10-day online auction
featuring celebrity memorabilia autographed by Yao Ming, other NBA players as
well as celebrities from around the world. Upper Deck has contributed
autographed items for the online auction, including: a signed Kobe Bryant jersey
and a signed Tiger Woods photo and other NBA trading card sets. Other sponsors
of the online and televised charity drive, the first of its kind in China,
include the NBA, Shanghai TV, Pepsi, Gatorade, Kodak, China Unicom, Avery
Dennison and Nike. The entire 3-hour show will be televised through TV/Satellite
through various stations in China, including Shanghai TV, Beijing TV, Guangdong
TV and Wuhan TV.
"I am very pleased with the inauguration of the Yao Ming websites. My fan
base is very important to me professionally and personally. At the same time I
am honored to make a contribution to help the Chinese people in this difficult
time. The telethon's message of encouragement and support will go a long way in
uniting people and in strengthening our resolve in the battle against SARS.
SOHU, as a leading online mass media property, can help us reach the young,
urban people and make their voices heard in expressing gratitude and support to
the medical community that is on the frontline of fighting this war," Yao Ming
remarked.
"This is a great opportunity for Upper Deck, Sohu.com, and Yao Ming to reach
out and help those that are suffering at the hands of the SARS epidemic," said
Louise Curcio, Director of Marketing for The Upper Deck Company. "We are proud
to join the ranks of those fighting this deadly disease and to donate signed
sports memorabilia that will in turn help fund the fight against the deadly SARS
virus."
"Through this charity drive we all can do something positive about combating
this disease that has affected everybody in China. We are privileged to play a
role in the telethon and auction through which Yao Ming utilizes his immense
appeal with the Chinese public for a just cause. At the same time, Yao Ming's
decision to choose SOHU as his partner underscores our leadership position as
online mass media property in the fast growing Chinese Internet market," said
Victor Koo, Chief Operating Officer of SOHU.com.
